Railways in the United States of America by state

The primary function of railways in the United States of America is freight transportation. Long-distance passenger services are not very popular due to the extensive network of much faster, cheaper, and more frequent air connections. Nevertheless, tourists often choose interstate trains due to stunning views operated by Amtrak. Currently, there are dozens of long-distance trains operating in the USA. That’s not much compared to Europe.

The United States of America is a vast country, and distances between stations on some single-track routes can reach up to a hundred kilometers. Most lines are not electrified.

In some states, there are no passenger trains. The largest cities have metropolitan railways or regional trains.

There are many tourist trains in the United States of America.
