Wien Hbf train station

Wien Hbf train station is the main railway station in Vienna and busiest long-distance railway station in Austria. The modern station was built on the site od Wien Südbahnhof station, which was demolished in 2009. The new station was became fully operational in December 2015. It serves all categories of the trains – S-Bahn, regional, long-distance and international trains.

Wien Hbf train station is located close to the city centre. Some of the main tourist attractions are within walking distance from the station, other are accessible via metro. The station is well connected to the Vienna U-Bahn system, and is also accessible by Vienna S-Bahn, tram and bus lines. The Südtiroler Platz S-Bahn station was renamed Wien Hauptbahnhof.

The station has a total of five island platforms, each with 2 sides, for a total of 10 platforms. These five islands are complete with striking canopies. Wien Hbf train station is fully accessible to disabled people. Access to the platform is possible by escalators or lifts.

Public transport

Subway: The subway line U1 passes through the station. The subway stop is about 500 meters from the above-ground train tracks.

U1: Reumannplatz – Südtiroler Platz – Hauptbahnhof- Karlsplatz- Stephansplatz – Praterstern – Kaisermühlen VIC – Kagran – Leopoldau.

S-Bahn: S-Bahn trains toward Wien Mitte depart from platform 2. Journey to the Wien Mitte and Wien Praterstern stations takes a few minutes. The S-Bahns run continuously on Friday nights and Saturday nights and on public holidays. All S-Bahns run at least every 20 minutes, and every 30 minutes at night.

Buses: 13A, 69A, N66, Flixbus’s buses also stop at Wien Hbf train station.

Trams: 18, D, O – tram line no 18 runs underground. Tram D is a small walk from the main entrance and can be accessed from section E of platforms 3 to 12. The D station is called “Hauptbahnhof Ost”

Ticket vending machines for city public transport are available in many places. 24-hour tickets are available.

There are many newsstands with foreign press – not only in English, but also, for example in Serbian and Croatian languages.

An underground parking lot offers places for 600 vehicles, but rates are very expensive.
