The railway line was put into operation on 22 June 1901. Initially, the line was 3,5 kilometer long from the pier near today’s harbour through the island village to the hospice and was served by horse-drawn trams. On October 1936 severe storm destroyed the pier. The new railway was opened on 2 July 1937 – horses were replaced by steam locomotives. Since then, the line has ended in the newly built train station on the outskirts of the town based on plans by the Aurich architect Ludwig Deichgräber.

In 1995 rolling stock fleet was replaced – the Langeoog island railway purchased ten new passenger cars from Bremer Waggonbau and a car for luggage containers, as well as five diesel locomotives from Schöma. At the same time, the old diesel railcars and closed passenger cars were sold – mostly to Harz Narrow Gauge Railways.

Tracks were upgraded in 2002.
