Westerland train station is the railway station in Westerland on the island of Sylt. The station is located in the city center. It is a terminus railway station for regional and long-distance trains. To the left of the passenger platforms is a freight station; to the right is the car shuttle (Autozug Sylt) terminus.
The station was opened in June 1927 when the Marsch Railway was extended to Sylt via 11 km long Hinderburgdamn. It was considered the largest and most modern on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Platforms and station were renovated in 2010.
Westerland train station is the central hub for local public transport on the island of Sylt. There is a bus station right next to the train station, from where the entire island is served by five lines of the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG). Until 1970 on the site of today’s bus station was located Sylter Inselbahn’s station.

Westerland train station – trains
Regional trains from Westerland to Niebüll run often. Some trains are extended to Bredstedt or Hamburg. From Niebüll you can continue your journey to Tønder in Denmark. It’s possible to organize one-day trip from Westerland to Tønder and Ribe – beautiful towns in Denmark.
The auto-train car shuttle train terminal in Niebüll is connected to the Autobahnen in Schleswig-Holstein by Federal Highways (Bundesstraßen) B5 and B199.

The train journey from Berlin to Sylt takes about 6 hours. The regional train from Hamburg to Westerland takes almost two and a half hours to cover the route.
