Sylt is a former island in northern Germany. The northernmost island of Germany is a popular tourist destination, known for its tourist resorts and 40 km long sandy beach. Sylt is connected to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway. There are regional and long-distance trains on Sylt. Westerland station is terminus for all trains from mainland to Sylt island.
Trains on Sylt
The Hinderburgdamn causeway is an 11 km-long causeway joining the North Frisian island of Sylt to mainland Schleswig-Holstein. It was opened in 1927 as a railway corridor. There is no road link to Sylt and every day more than 100 trains pass over the causeway, 50 of those ferrying cars. Regional and long-distance trains passes through the causeway. A train trip along the causeway lasts about 10 minutes, and journey time between the auto terminals at Niebüll on the mainland and Westerland on Sylt is about 30 minutes.
There are three train stations on Sylt island – Morsum, Keitum, and Westerland.
Regional trains from Westerland to Niebüll run often. Some trains are extended to Bredstedt or Hamburg. From Niebüll you can continue your journey to Tønder in Denmark. It’s possible to organize one-day trip from Westerland to Tønder and Ribe – beautiful towns in Denmark.
The auto-train car shuttle train terminal in Niebüll is connected to the Autobahnen in Schleswig-Holstein by Federal Highways (Bundesstraßen) B5 and B199.

Berlin – Westerland
Frankfurt am Main – Westerland
The train journey from Berlin to Sylt takes about 6 hours. The regional train from Hamburg to Westerland takes almost two and a half hours to cover the route.

Sylt Island Railway
In the past, 1000 mm narrow-gauge railway connected most of the villages, beaches and resorts on Sylt island. Sylt Island Railway, known as the Racing Emma, was a a 1000 mm gauge railway opened in 1888.
There were three railway lines on Sylt:
Westerland – Munkmarsch (4.2 km)(Ostbahn/Eastern Railway)
Westerland – List (17.1 km) (Nordbahn/Northern Railway)
Westerland – Hörnum (18.8 km) (Südbahn/Southern Railway)
The narrow-gauge railway was in operation from 1888 to 1970.
