Željeznice Republike Srpske is the railway operator serving routes north of the city of Doboj, in the “Serbian” part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The rolling stock of the Railways of the Republic of Srpska mainly consists of old passenger cars that once belonged to Yugoslav Railways, as well as a railbus purchased from the Slovenian Railways. Due to the company’s dire financial situation, there have been no investments in passenger rolling stock for years, and none are expected in the near future. A few years ago, two passenger cars were vandalized by hooligans after a football match in Banja Luka. While the company has begun modernizing its fleet, only freight cars have undergone refurbishment so far.
The company operates the following railway routes:
– Tuzla – Doboj (service suspended)
– Doboj – Banja Luka
– Banja Luka – Dobrjlin
Rolling stock
The rolling stock consists of old passenger cars manufactured in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The company only operates compartment cars, which have either six or eight seats per compartment. Smoking is not prohibited on these trains, and ashtrays are still present in compartments and corridors. Residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina smoke large amounts of cigarettes, so smoke is pervasive throughout the train. Toilets are dirty, and the cars are not equipped with air conditioning. The trains are also not adapted for passengers with disabilities.

The operator does not run long-distance or international trains. In the past, Željeznice Republike Srpske coaches were used on the Belgrade – Sarajevo and Zagreb – Sarajevo routes.
Interrail passes are accepted by this operator.
The company was founded in 1992. Since 1996, its headquarters have been located in Doboj, a city known as the “city of railway workers” and formerly the second-largest railway junction in the former Yugoslavia.
