Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine is the railway operator in Bosnia and Herzegovina that operates rail services in the Muslim-majority part of the country, south of the city of Doboj. The company was established in 2001. It handles both passenger and freight rail transport. Its rolling stock mainly consists of passenger cars from the former Yugoslavia, a few old Swedish cars from the 1960s, and old HŽ 6111 electric multiple units.
The pride of the operator is its Talgo trainsets purchased from Spain, which currently run on the Sarajevo – Mostar – Čapljina route and on the Sarajevo – Mostar – Ploče weekend summer train. These modern trains are equipped with air conditioning and are accessible to people with disabilities. Tickets are checked before boarding, and seat reservations are mandatory. Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine also owns Talgo trains intended for overnight service. These were purchased for the Zagreb – Sarajevo connection, but that route is currently not in operation. In the past, Talgo trains served the Sarajevo – Banja Luka and Sarajevo – Bihać routes, which are no longer active.
Bosnian Railways also purchased a Končar electric multiple unit from Croatia, intended for suburban service. However, in November 2013, the train had to be returned to the manufacturer due to a lack of funds to cover installment payments.
As of 2025, Željeznice Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine operated trains on the following routes:
Sarajevo – Mostar
Sarajevo – Maglaj
Sarajevo – Zenica
Sarajevo – Pazarić
Sarajevo – Čapljina
Sarajevo – Ploče (summer only)
The Sarajevo – Mostar railway line is considered one of the most beautiful railway routes in Europe.
Interrail passes are accepted by this operator.
On the suburban and regional trains smoking is allowed. On the Talgo trains smoking is strictly prohibited.
