Trains in Porto

Porto is second-largest city in Portugal, renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and scenic location along the Douro River. The city was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Porto is also a major railway junction in Portugal. Trains in Porto provide access to many destinations throughout Portugal. There are urban trains, suburban trains, Intercity and Alfa Pendular trains. Most popular are one-day train trips from Porto to Aveiro and Coimbra. Douro Line is most popular among tourists – the scenic railway along the Douro River is considered one of the most scenic railway lines in Europe.

Regional trains in Porto area are generally cheap. If you want to travel by long-distance trains from Porto to Lisbon, Valenca or Coimbra, consider Portugal Rail Pass.

Andante Tour Card – a multimodal network pass that allows you to tra travel in STCP buses, other selected bus lines, Metro and urban trains in all the Andante Area. You choose only the number of days you want to travel.

Andante Tour 1 is valid for 24 consecutive hours after first validation.
Andante Tour 3 is valid over 72 consecutive hours after first validation.

Portugal Rail Pass – the pass allows unlimited travel for three or seven days in a month on all Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, Regional/InterRegional and Urban trains. It can be bought only by people who do not live in Portugal. The card is valid for a month as of the purchase date. There are passes for adults and for children with discount.

Passe Ferroviaro Nacional – similar to a very popular Deutschlandticket in Germany. National Railway Pass allows to unlimited travel in regional trains for a month. It’s a new pass valid for all regional trains throughout the country. The monthly pass (calendar month) is loaded onto a CP card. The cards are on sale from the 21st of the month before they are valid. Price is 49 EUR (2024).

The CP card may be requested at ticket offices by presenting the following documents:

Official identification document: Citizen’s Card, Identity Card, Driving License or Passport;
One current (original) colour passport-type photograph;
Completion of the CP card requisition form (paid)

Train stations in Porto

There are two main railway stations in Porto:

Porto Campanha – main train station located in the civil parish of Campanhã in Porto. The station was opened on 21 May 1875. Currently, Porto Campanha station provides access to local commuter trains, long-distance domestic trains and international trains to Vigo. The station serves also the Douro Line – scenic route along the Douro River Valley. Trains from Porto to Pocinho are very popular among tourists from all over the world.

Porto Sao Bento – one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world train station is located in the city center. It is famous for beautiful vestibule covered in azulejo tiles, framed by pilasters. Above azulejo visitors and passengers can admire large azulejo paintings depicting historical events in Portuguese history. There are many regional trains the station. Porto Sao Bento station doesn’t serve long-distance trains.

Railway enthusiasts can get off at Aveiro station and continue their journey to Sernada do Vouga – it is the last operational metre-gauge railway in Portugal but two sections of the line are not interconnected (rehabilitation is ongoing).

Please note: Tickets for urban and regional trains must be validated before you boarding train. Train ticket validation machines are located on platforms.

Funicular railways in Porto

Funicular de Los Guindais (Porto) – the funicular railway, inaugurated in 2004, follows a route where a similar railway operated between 1891 and 1893. The length of the route is 281 meters, with a journey time of about 3 minutes. Each car can carry 25 people. The funicular operates daily and is part of the city’s public transportation system. The funicular is primarily intended for residents of Porto and is not one of the most popular tourist attractions. The funicular is situated along the wall of Freiras, running down a steep cliff between the quay at Guindais and Rua da Batalha. It is owned and operated by Porto Metro.
