Train stations in Warsaw

Warsaw is the capital and largest city of Poland. There are many train stations in Warsaw (more than 60 train stations and train stops). Most of them are intended for local and regional traffic. Only seven railway stations and stops are important for tourists.

Many regional and long-distance trains start and end in Warsaw. Most of them stop at the Warszawa Centralna station located in the city center. Some of them are temporarily rerouted and end at the Warszawa Gdańska station, bypassing the Warszawa Centralna station.

Suburban and regional trains in Warsaw are operated by Szybka Kolej Miejska Warszawa (SKM Warszawa), Koleje Mazowieckie and Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa WKD (only one route on a separate railway line from Warszawa Centralna WKD to Grodzisk Mazowiecki). Semi-fast trains between Lodz and Warsaw are operated by Polregio and Lodzka Kolej Dojazdowa. PKP Intercity operates long-distance and international trains in Poland.

Trains operated by SKM Warszawa and Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa are not equipped with a toilet.

Most important train stations in Warsaw

Warszawa Centralna (Warsaw Central Station) – the largest railway station in Warsaw. A clean and well-maintained station fully accessible to the disabled people and always full of people. The station is located in the city centre, next to the Palace of Culture and Science. Most tourist attractions in Warsaw downtown is situated within walking distance – 15-30 minutes from the station. Many underground platforms, shops, bistros and services. If you are traveling to Warsaw, it is best to get off at this station.

Warszawa Śródmieście (Warsaw Downtown) – an underground railway station next to the Warszawa Centralna station. It serves suburban and regional trains. The station offers convenient ground-level transfers to the nearby Centrum metro station as well as a large number of trams and buses. The station is connected by an underground pedestrian passage to Warszawa Centralna, which serves long-distance trains, and Warszawa Śródmieście WKD, which serves Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa trains.

Warszawa Gdańska – not large neglected railway station located 4 kilometers from the city centre. It was constructed for regional traffic, but due to engineering works temporarily serves also long-distance and international trains. The station is well-connected with the city centre via metro. Metro station is located next to the railway station.

Warszawa Powiśle – a train stop situated about 150 meters from the Nowy Świat shopping street in the city centre. It lies nearest to the Old Town but the station serves only local and regional trains (Koleje Mazowieckie and Szybka Kolej Miejska). Long-distance trains pass through the station, but don’t stop here. Steep stairs from the main hall to the platforms – no lifts. If you have a heavy luggage, it is very difficult to move from platform to the small station hall. It is not accessible for people with limited mobility.

Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East) – a terminus for many long-distance and international trains. It is located on the eastern side of the Vistula river, far from the city centre. The station is divided into long-distance and suburban halls. In a lot of ways, the railway station resembles railway stations in the countries of the former USSR. The area around the station is generally unsafe.

Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West) – the station important for tourists, because it’s connected with the international bus station. Currently, the extensive reconstruction of the station is underway, so there are problems with access to the platforms. I advise you to avoid this station until the renovation is completed.

Warszawa Główna (Warsaw Main station) – it is not a main station in Warsaw. It is in fact only a minor station serving a small number of regional trains between Warsaw and Lodz. It is located between Warszawa Ochota train stop and Warszawa Zachodnia train station. It houses a large railway museum (definitely worth visit) Stacja Muzeum.

In addition, Warszawa Stadion train station (Warsaw Stadium) is situated about 300 meters from the National Stadium in Warsaw.
