Train stations in Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia. The city is visited by many tourists from around the world. Most of them come to Bratislava by train. There are twelve train stations in Bratislava and four train stops. Only two stations are important for tourists – Bratislava hlavná stanica and Bratislava-Petržalka.

Bratislava hlavná stanica (Bratislava Main Station) is the largest railway station of the city of Bratislava. It serves many regional, long-distance and international trains. The station is located not far from the city center – city transport stops are situated in front to the station. The station is neglected and in my opinion is an embarrassment to the Bratislava. There are many shops, fast-foods and bistros but also many beggars, junkies and drunkers.

Bratislava-Petržalka train station is located at Petržalka, the largest housing estate in Slovakia. It is not a large station but it currently serves regional cross-border trains from Bratislava to Vienna. The station was opened in 1897. It was rebuild in 1990s. Cross-border train service to Wienna started in 1999. The station serves also cross-border trains to Rajka, Hungary.

The bus no 93 connects both stations. It is a fast connection, journey time is about 15 minutes. Buses run every 10-15 minutes. Ticket vending machines for city public transport are available in front of the stations. Dopravny podnik Bratislava offers tickets valid for 24 hours, 72 hours and 168 hours. These ticket are very good option for tourists and are relatively cheap.

Bratislava-Nové Mesto train station also serves many regional and long-distance connections. The station is located far from the city centre. The station is connected by train with both main stations in Bratislava – Bratislava hlavná stanica and Bratislava-Petržalka.

Bratislava-Vinohrady and Bratislava-Predmestie stations are located approximately one kilometer from the popular student dormitory Mlada Garda (this place is also functioning as hostel). Bratislava-Vinohrady train station is dirty and there is even no toilet. The Bratislava-Predmestie station was partially renovated and is equipped with toilet.
