Liepaja is an industrial and port city in western Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea. It is Latvia’s third largest city, founded in 13th century by Livonian Order. It has reputation as the windiest city in Latvia.
For many years there were only weekend trains to Liepaja for students and workers. Trains ran from Riga on Fridays and Sundays in the evening and back from Liepaja in Saturdays and Mondays in the early morning. Although trains between the cities have been running twice a week only, have usually been full.
Railway has been losing the battle with buses on the route. There are numerous buses between Liepaja and the capital – a dozen times a day.
From July 31, 2023, trains run every day. On Sundays there are two trains between the cities. The number of passengers rapidly increased. In the mornings the train runs from Liepaja to Riga, but in the evenings train goes back from Riga.
