Jurmala is a popular seaside resort town in Latvia. Jurmala consists 14 townships and stretching 32 km. During Soviet occupation Jūrmala was a favorite holiday-resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party officials. Today is a very popular destination for one day trip from Riga – among Rigans and tourists. Jurmala is famous for its sandy beaches and traditional wooden houses from the 19th and first half of the 20th century.
Train from Riga to Jurmala is the best way to get to the city. Trains run very frequently – two or three times an hour. The train ride from Riga takes 30 to 35 minutes.
There are thirteen stations in Jurmala. It’s best to get off at the Majori station. The Majori station is located near 1 km long pedestrian street, beach city center and tourist information center.
The railway through Jūrmala is currently double-track and electrified. This route is operated by old RVR electric multiple units, refurbished RVR electric multiple units and new trains manufactured in Czech Republic. Old and refurbished RVR electric multiple units have no toilets and air-conditioning. New trains are equipped with vacuum toilet and air-conditioning.
