Train from Riga to Cesis

Cesis is one of the most beautiful and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Baltics. It has a rich history of more than 800 years. It is the third oldest town in Latvia – founded in 1206. Cesis is definitely worth visit.

Train from Riga to Cesis is the good way to get to the city. Passenger trains from Riga to Valmiera and Valga stops at Cesis station. There are four trains in each direction daily, but is possible to arrange one-day train trip from Riga. Accomodation in Cesis is quite expensive. Journey time varies – from 80 to 120 minutes.

This route is operated by old RVR diesel multiple units. Some of them has no toilet on board. In the nearest future refurbished trains will appear on the route.

Train from Riga to Cesis is operated by Vivi (former Pasažieru Vilciens).

Trains are not accessible for people on wheelchairs.  Tickets are relatively cheap.

Cesis – tourist attractions

– Cesis Medieval Castle – charming ruins, tourists can see castle garden, towers, and dungeons.
– Cesis New Castle; castle-like 18th-century Castle manor house built into the medieval fortification system.
– Old town; narrow, winding streets, wooden houses (some in dilapidated state)
– Christ Transfiguration Orthodox Churchi in the North-East steep slope of the Castle Park.
– Cīrulīši Nature Trails
– Araisi archeological park (7 km from the city centre)
