Train from Oravița to Anina – key facts

One of the more famous routes is the Oravița–Anina railway, opened in 1863, and considered one of the most scenic railways in the Balkans. On the 33-kilometer route, the train passes through 14 tunnels and crosses 10 viaducts. The speed is far from fast — it takes about two hours to cover the distance. However, a major advantage is that the carriages have openable windows, allowing passengers to fully enjoy the views. Currently, only one train per day operates on this line.

In 2025 a ticket for the entire route costs 33 RON, which is approximately 5 EUR.

Train from Oravița to Anina – additional information

One challenge is that Oravița station was once a railway hub, but today no other trains arrive there apart from this one. If I’m not mistaken, the nearest larger town with train service is Reșița, located 38 km from Anina. Reșița itself is worth a visit for those interested in industry and socialist-era housing, due to its history and the Railway Museum.

You can reach Reșița Nord station by train from Timișoara (96 km in nearly 3 hours), or Reșița Sud station from Caransebeș (43 km in about 70 minutes).

The best way to get to Oravița or Anina is by private car, which makes access difficult for tourists who are railway enthusiasts but do not have their own transportation. If public transport were better developed, this line would have enormous potential as a tourist attraction.
