There are two tourist trains in Tunisia. The first one “Red Lizard” is famous all around the world. The second one is less known. The presidential train in Tunisia for tourists purposes was inauguerated in 2015. The train appeared in famous tv series “Des trains pas comme les autres”.
It is difficult to find information about the train in publicly accessible sources.
The train was gift from Germany to the first President of the Tunisian Republic Habib Bourguiba. The train was renovated by French specialists and tour operator Discovery Trains for tourists purposes. The presidential train in Tunisia ran as an excursion train – passengers could choose from several trips across Tunisia lasting between two and nine days. It’s a daytime train – passengers were accomodated in hotels.
The train was manufactured in 1960s. The carriages accommodate a total of 40 people.
There were plans to refurbish seven decommisioned sleeping cars with 2-bed compartments and to launch hotel train.
The train is comprised of stylish lounge cars and hauled by a diesel locomotive.
The presidential train Habib Bourguiba probably runs only upon a request of travel agencies.
