Ostrava hlavní nádraží is the main railway station in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The station was built between 1966 and 1974, designed by Lubomír Lacina and Vlasta Douša. It is a typical socialist-era structure – gray and gloomy and in my opinion does not make a good impression on travelers. The station is located in the Přívoz district, which is architecturally interesting but known for a high crime level. The station is characterized by architectural features such as mosaics and sculptures.
The first train arrived in Ostrava on May 1, 1847. The original station building was expanded in 1892–1893.
Ostrava hlavní nádraží (Ostrava Main Station) is an important railway hub. Three railway lines pass through the station:
Opava východ – Český Těšín
323 Ostrava – Valašské Meziříčí
271 Bohumín – Olomouc hlavní nádraží – Česká Třebová
In addition, there is an industrial railway line connecting Ostrava hlavní nádraží to the coal mines in and around Ostrava.
Services
The following services are available at the station:
– ticket offices
– luggage lockers
– toilets
– ČD Center
– tourist information point
– food and drink vending machines
– newsstand
– bakery
– café
– waiting room
Platforms
Access to the platforms is via a covered footbridge over the tracks. The station is accessible for people with disabilities—there are elevators between floors and lifts from the footbridge down to the platforms. One drawback of the station is the location of the platforms for trains heading toward Frýdek-Místek—transferring between trains can be very complicated for those unfamiliar with the station.
Public transport
In front of the station building is a public transport hub with buses, trolleybuses, and trams departing from there. Tickets can be purchased from a ticket machine. A tram or trolleybus ride to the city center of Ostrava takes less than 10 minutes. 24-hour tourist tickets are available.
