Murtalbahn – a passenger’s guide

Murtalbahn is a narrow-gauge railway located almost entirely within the region of Styria, Austria. This picturesque railway line connects the towns of Unzmarkt, Murau, and Tamsweg. Trains travel through the Mur River Valley, offering views of peaceful villages and forest-covered hills from the windows. The line is 76.1 km long, making it the fourth-longest narrow-gauge railway in Austria. It is operated by Steiermarkbahn (STB), which is owned by the state of Styria. The track gauge is 760 mm.

Construction of the railway began on August 27, 1893, and the line officially opened on October 7, 1894, following trial runs held the previous month. The railway was originally designed with the potential to be converted in the future to standard gauge (1435 mm).

On October 1, 1912, request stops were introduced along the route.

In the past, Murtalbahn trains extended service to Mauterndorf. However, in 1973, passenger service between Tamsweg and Mauterndorf was suspended for economic reasons. The stations along this section were far from residential areas, making bus travel a more convenient option for passengers. Today, heritage trains (Taurachbahn) run seasonally on the closed section.

During the 1980s, there were discussions about closing the Murtalbahn due to its uncompetitive travel times.

In July 2021, a Murtalbahn train car collided with a fallen tree, derailed, and fell into the river. On board were 54 students, 17 of whom were injured. The line was closed for a month following the accident.

Murtalbahn trains operate daily as regional services. Throughout the year, diesel multiple units provide passenger service. Several times a year, heritage steam trains consisting of a steam locomotive and vintage coaches run from Murau to Tamsweg. Unzmarkt station accommodates both standard-gauge and narrow-gauge trains, with easy transfers from regional and long-distance trains arriving from across Austria.

Murau is considered one of Steier’s most beautiful small towns. Its brewery dates back to the 15th century, and in winter, many tourists visit nearby Kreischberg, a resort known for its excellent skiing conditions. With a population of about 3,500, Murau boasts a charming town center and a riverside promenade. Overlooking the town is Murau Castle, owned by the Schwarzenberg family, which can only be visited twice a week with a guide from June to September. The area also offers numerous hiking trails.
