Rossio train station in Lisbon is one of the most beautiful railway stations in Portugal. The station was the main passenger train station in Lisbon until 1957. The station connects the capital to the region of Sintra. Currently, the station serves only commuter trains to Sintra. Long-distance trains terminated at Rossio until the early 1990s.
The station was designed between 1886 and 1887 by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro in Neo-Manueline style typical to Rossio square. Rossio train station is located 1,5 km from the city centre and was built in one of the most important squares of Lisbon. The western wall of the train shed has a series of tiled pictures with classic religious themes and modern views of Lisbon. The statue of King Sebastian of Portugal on the façade of the station was accidentally destroyed on 3 May 2016.
Rossio train station is is situaded in the central urban area of Lisbon. The trains enter the station through a tunnel which is over 2.9 km long. The tunnel was completed in 1890 and it is considered one of the most important works of engineering in Portugal in 19st century.
At night, the train station is illuminated.
Closest metro station is Rossio station on the Green Line located between Figueira Square and Rossio Square. Right next to the metro station, there is a bus stop.

The station serves commuter trains from Lisbon to Sintra. The trains run from early morning until late evening every 20 minutes. The trains are often crowded because they are very popular among tourists visiting Portugal.
There are trains to Sintra also from Lisboa Oriente train station.
Seat reservation is not required. You don’t need to buy tickets in advance but long queues sometimes form at the ticket counters.
