Katowice train station

Katowice train station is the largest railway station in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region and one of the most important railway junctions in Poland. The current station building was opened in 2012. The old one constructed in 1972 was demolished in 2010. The historic railway station building from 1859 is located 300 meters from the new station. Railway station in Katowice is a modern station integrated with shopping mall. It serves domestic and international trains. Regional trains are operated by Polregio and Koleje Śląskie (Silesian Railways).

Train station in Katowice is located in the city centre. It is only a five-minute walk to Market Square.

There are many bus and tram stops close to the station. At the station is integrated underground bus station. International bus station is located approximately 800 meters from the train station.

Currently, there are direct trains to Katowice Airport. You need to take a bus line AP. It is a fast connection (journey lasts about 40 minutes).

The station has 4 platforms. Platform number five has been closed a few years ago. Access to the platforms via tunnels. There are ramps and escalators and lift to the platform 4. Platforms are covered.

The station is generally clean and well-maintained but is not safe – at the station and in the vicinity of the station you meet many strange, drunk and aggressive people.

There is no typical waiting room at the station – only a few uncomfortable seats in the main hall.

Katowice – tourist attractions

Katowice train station is located in the city centre but many tourist attractions are situated 3-5 kilometers from the station. The main tourist information centre is located on the main square, only a few minutes walk away.

– Spodek multipurpose arena
– KTM Towers
– Cathedral of Christ the King
– Silesian Parlament
– Silesian Museum
– Nikiszowiec, a historic workers’ housing estate (far from the station)
– St Mary’s Church

I highly recommend to visit the Silesian Park (a 20 minutes walk away or by tram). It is a huge park on the border between Katowice and Chorzów. There are many attractions for kids and families, for example theme park, open-air museum, zoological garden, planetarium and abandoned narrow-gauge railway.
