Children’s Railway in Yekaterinburg

Children’s Railway in Yekaterinburg (Малая Свердловская железная дорога имени Н. А. Островского) is located in Mayakovsky Central Park of Culture and Culture. The railway was opened on 9 July 1960 but first plans to build a narrow-gauge railway in region appeared in 1930s shortly after the first children’s railway in Tbilisi was inaugurated.

At the end of the 1950s the proposed construction children’s railway in Sverdlovsk was widely discussed in the local press. Construction of the railway was approved the city committee in 1958. The same year construction began. The grand opening of the children’s railway took place on 9 July 1960. Since 1961 the railway has been named after Nikolai Alekseevich Ostrovsky.

In 2009-2010 tracks were repair and upgraded, stations and platforms were renovated.

In 2014-2016 a complete reconstruction of the children’s railway was carried out. The route was extended. The new station, located closer to the entrance to the park was opened on 13 September 2016.

Total length of the Children’s Railway in Yekaterinburg after reconstruction is 3.11 km (before 2.41 km). The railway has 3 stations (Yekaterinburg-Detsky, Centralnaja, Yubileinaya) and 2 stops (Solnechnaya, Pionierskaya). The railway was built to 750 mm gauge.

Central station houses a small narrow-gauge railway museum.
