Train from Zaječar to Majdanpek is a regional train connection in eastern Serbia. The train passes through scenic railway line which is the part of the Zaječar – Požarevac railway, but passenger trains currently run only to Majdanpek station.
The distance between stations is about 161 km and the journey lasts more than six hours. The ride through rural communities of Serbia is very slow. From Majdanpek you can continue your journey to Požarevac and Belgrade by bus.
The connection is currently served by old Y1 Swedish-manufactured railbuses but in 2026 almost all of the trains were replaced by Russian-manufactured diesel multiple units of Srbija Voz.

Most important towns and cities:
Zaječar – the largest city in the Timok region of eastern Serbia. An average town with some interesting places. Zaječar is best known internationally for the nearby Roman archaeological site of Felix Romuliana. Felix Romuliana was a magnificent imperial palace complex built by Emperor Galerius, who was born in the region. The archaeological complex contains monumental walls, towers, gates, palaces, mosaics and religious buildings. Zaječar has an important local museum, the National Museum of Zaječar, which presents the archaeological and historical heritage of the region. The town is also famous for the Gitarijada, one of the oldest rock music festivals in Serbia and Zaječarsko beer. The surrounding region is known for vineyards and wine production, particularly around the Negotin area.
Bor – one of Serbia’s most important mining centres. The Bor mining area contains large deposits of copper, gold and other minerals. The town has a distinctive industrial character and is one of the best places in Serbia to see the country’s mining heritage. The Museum of Mining and Metallurgy presents the geological, archaeological and industrial history of the region.
Despite its industrial image, Bor is surrounded by mountains and forests and offers access to several natural attractions. Borsko Jezero (Bor Lake) is a popular recreational area about 15 km from the city, used for swimming, boating, fishing and summer tourism. Lazareva Pećina (Lazar’s Cave) is one of Serbia’s best-known caves and is located in the nearby Zlot area.
The Zlot Caves and surrounding karst landscape are important natural attractions. Mount Stol, near Bor, is popular with hikers and offers panoramic views over eastern Serbia.
Majdanpek – a small mining town in eastern Serbia, situated in a mountainous area between Bor and the Danube.The town is surrounded by the Homolje and Miroč mountain areas, with extensive forests and dramatic limestone landscapes. One of the most interesting natural attractions is Rajkova Pećina (Rajko’s Cave), a large cave system near Majdanpek. Rajkova Cave contains underground passages, chambers, stalactites and stalagmites and is one of eastern Serbia’s best-known caves. The nearby Rajko’s Cave and Rajkovo Valley combine karst scenery with dense forests and hiking trails. Majdanpek is also relatively close to the Đerdap National Park and the spectacular Iron Gates (Đerdap) Gorge on the Danube.
