Kaliningrad Oblast is a Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland. It is Russia’s westernmost region but it shares no borders with mainland Russia. The Kalliningrad Railway is the smallest subsidiary of the Russian Railways by route length (618 km). Moscow is 1,200 kilometres from Kaliningrad.

The most important railway junction is Kaliningrad. About half of the population of the region lives in the capital. Most lines were built before the Second World War. The railway lines were construct in broad gauge, but there are also standard gauge lines used for freight transport.
Before Russian aggression against Ukraine e-Visa for Citizens of Poland was introduced. It seemed that the situation is improving – many people wanted to visit Kaliningrad for tourist purposes. There was hope, that the international passenger trains to Kaliningrad would be reinstated. Today there is fear of war and Russian invasion.
In Kaliningrad, there is a small railway museum with an open air exhibition of rolling stock near the main station
Train travel in Kaliningrad Oblast – domestic trains
There are some domestic trains in Kaliningrad Oblast. Trains are operated by Kaliningrad Railway (Калининградская железная дорога). A two lines are electrified and used for commuter and international transport.
Passenger trains terminate at Kaliningrad Yuzhny Vokzal. The station, formerly known as Königsberg Hauptbahnhof was opened in 1929. The reconstruction of the station of the station took place in 2003. There are two separate ticket offices – for commuter trains and for long-distance trains. Before entering the platform you need go through the gates. Hold your ticket after you get off from the train – you will need go through the gates again.

There are two categories of domestic trains: “prigradski” – suburban train which stops at all station and “skorij” which stops only at designated stations.
Except for Kaliningrad – Svetlogorsk route, there are very few trains between the cities, mostly one or two trains a day in each direction. You can plan one-day train trip from Kaliningrad to Svetlogorsk.
Rolling stock consists of modern electric multiple units “Lastochka”, diesel multiple units RA1 and RA2 and old Soviet-era electric and diesel multiple units RVR.
Train travel in Kaliningrad Oblast – international trains
There are international trains from Kaliningrad Oblast to Belarus and Russia. These trains run through Lithuania. Trains are comprised of sleeping cars with 4-bed compartments and VIP carriages (2-bed compartments).
International trains run on the following routes:

There are no passenger trains from Kaliningrad to Lithuania. In 2018 the service from Klaipeda to Sovetsk was launched. The train ran for a very short time and was cancelled.
There are no passenger trains from Kaliningrad to Poland also. Fast train Gdynia – Kaliningrad was cancelled many ears ago. There were plans to launch the trains from Olsztyn to Kaliningrad but due to pandemic and political situation were abandoned.
