Train travel in Macau – a general overview

Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China. For a long time, Macau had no railways, but in recent years, Light Transit Railway (LTR) lines have been opened. In fact, it is a rubber-tyred people mover system. The new Light Transit Railway network is intended to alleviate traffic congestion.

The first Light Transit Railway line connects Taipa Ferry Terminal with Oceano. This 9.3 km-long line was opened in 2019 and includes 11 stations along its route.

At the end of 2024, the Hengqin Line was opened. The line runs west from an interchange at Lótus on the Taipa Line, initially on an elevated track. It then descends into a 900-meter tunnel beneath the Shizimen Canal to reach the underground terminus station and border crossing facilities on Hengqin Island, which is part of Mainland China. Here, passengers can transfer to the Zhuhai Airport Intercity Railway. The Hengqin Line is 2.2 km long, with trains running every 6 minutes and a 2-minute journey time. It is a cross-border line connecting Macau with Mainland China.

In November 2024, the Seac Pai Van Line was opened. This 1.6 km extension of the existing Taipa Line includes 2 stations. The line leads to a newly built residential district and a new general hospital.

A new line is planned to open in 2029, called the East Line, which will be 7.7 km long and include 6 stations. The line will terminate near the Chinese border gate close to Gongbei.

Aside from the Light Transit Railway (LRT) lines, Macau does not have any conventional railway lines.
