České Budějovice train station

České Budějovice train station is the main railway station in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. The station building have been recently renovated and it’s one of the most beaufitul railway station in the Czech Republic.

The history of railway in České Budějovice began in 1828, when the horse-drawn railway from Linz to České Budějovice was opened. The small horse railway station was located elsewhere; today, the former station building houses the Horse Railway Museum. It was the first railway line on the territory of what is now the Czech Republic.

A small station near the current railway station was built in 1868. The current České Budějovice station building was constructed in 1908, designed by Gustav Kulhavý in the Neo-Renaissance style with Art Nouveau elements. On December 17, 1908, the first train stopped at the station—it was an international train from Trieste to Prague.

During Allied air raids on the city in 1945, the southern wing of the station building was severely damaged.

Between 2020 and 2024, the station underwent a major renovation.

České Budějovice is an important railway hub—here, the railway line connecting Prague and Linz intersects with local lines. The city is also an excellent base for day trips by train around South Bohemia.

Location

The České Budějovice railway station is located in the city center, close to the main attractions. Walking to the main square takes no more than 10 minutes. The most important historical sites and attractions of České Budějovice are situated in the city center, making the city easy to explore on foot.

The bus station is adjacent to the railway station—a walk between them takes only a few minutes. From here, suburban, regional, and long-distance buses depart.

Platforms

Two underpasses connect the main halls with the platforms. The station has four platforms. All are covered and accessible via stairs or elevators. The entire station is adapted for people with disabilities.

Public transport

In front of the station are public transport stops. Buses and trolleybuses connect the station with all districts of České Budějovice, but most tourists won’t need public transport since the main attractions are within walking distance. Tickets can be purchased from machines located at the stops; 24-hour tickets are available.

The building is divided between two main halls. On the left side you can find ticket offices, on the right side toilets and small shops.
