Train from Skopje to Bitola connects two largest cities in North Macedonia. Although is a main railway line with scenic sections and great potential, the timetable left a lot to be desired. At the time of writing an article there were only two trains running daily between the largest cities in the country. It may change in the future – in the second half of 2023, only one train daily was running. At the beginning of 2024, for several months, trains were canceled due to lack of rolling stock.
The connection is served by Chinese-manufactured diesel multiple units. Modern trains can carry more than 200 passengers and are equipped with an electronic display for steering, airconditioned coaches and vacuum toilets.
Trains are often overcrowded.

In the past trains from Skopje to Bitola were comprised of diesel locomotive and 2nd class seating carriages. Four trains ran daily, and it was possible to transfer from the Belgrade – Thessaloniki night train.

Train from Skopje to Bitola – main stations:
Veles – an important railway junction. The town town lies on the main railway line between Skopje and Thessaloniki and is located 55 km south-east of Skopje. The city is situated in the valley of the Vardar river and the houses are strewn around on the surrounding hills. Most important landmarks: St. Panteleimon Church – a beautiful example of Byzantine architecture with well-preserved frescoes, Clock Tower from the 18th century – an iconic symbol of Veles, offering panoramic views of the town, National Museum – it displays artifacts from various periods of the town’s history and Kosturnica Memorial above the city
Prilep – a historic town surrounded by picturesque landscapes, including the Veles Lake and the nearby mountains. It is known for remains of a medieval fortress offering stunning views of the city. Tourists visit also an ancient Treskavec Monastery located on a mountain near Prilep, famous for its beautiful frescoes and serene setting. In the city centre you can see the Church of St. Archangel Michael.
Railway station in Prilep is located about 1,5 km from the city center.
Bitola – the second-largest city in North Macedonia. Bitola has a nice city centre known for its vibrant atmosphere. Very popular is the main pedestrian street, Sirok Sokak lined with numerous cafes and restaurants, and Bitola Bazaar (Bezisten)- a historic marketplace showcasing Ottoman architecture and vibrant local trade. There are many mosques in the city (Ishak Çelebi Mosque is the largest of them). National Museum of Bitola displays artifacts from the history of the city and surrounding area. The Clock Tower (Saat Kula) is a symbol of the city. On the outskirts of the city is located an archeological site with well-preserved ruins of the ancient city Heraclea Lyncestis, founded in the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon. You can see an ancient theater, basilicas, and intricate mosaics.
