Trains between Vienna and Bratislava

There are many trains between Vienna and Bratislava. Trains between two capitals run every hour. Almost all of them are launched as a Regional Express train – fast regional train. There are two exceptions – an Intercity train Košice – Wien and Railjet train from Bratislava to Zurich. These trains are not recommended for tourists. Slovak Railways and Austrian Railways offer special return tickets for regional trains between Vienna and Bratislava but special tickets are not valid in Intercity and Railjet trains.

Currently, trains between Vienna and Bratislava terminate at Wien Hbf and Bratislava-Petržalka stations and no longer departure from Bratislava hlavná stanica (Bratislava Main Station). Bratislava-Petržalka train station is located at Petržalka, the largest housing estate in Slovakia. Bus line no. 80 connects the station with the city center and no. 93 (it is necessary to use station’s underpass to get to the stop of no. 93) connects the station with Bratislava main railway station. There is a ticket vending machine for city public transport. It may change in the future, so check carefully before your journey.

Bratislava-Petržalka train station – an ultimate guide

The distance between Vienna and Bratislava is 74 km. Journey time is about one hour. Special return tickets are relatively cheap. In 2024 return ticket costs 18-19 EUR.

Return tickets from Vienna to Bratislava

– valid as a day ticket for public transport in the city of Bratislava on the first day of validity.
– valid for a journey from all train stations in Vienna to Bratislava hl.st or Bratislava-Petrzalka and back on all local trains (REX and Os).
– ticket includes travelling with a bicycle.
– cancellation free of charge before 1st valid day.

A few years ago, return train tickets from Bratislava to Vienna were valid on public transport in Vienna on the first day of the ticket’s validity. Currently, there is no information about the validity of these tickets on public transportation in Vienna.

Trains between Vienna and Bratislava – rolling stock

Rolling stock fleet currently consists electric multiple units of ÖBB 4746 Cityjet (Siemens Desiro ML) and GySEV Siemens Desiro ML. The each trainset has three cars and with 244 seats. Trains are equipped with air-conditioning and two vacuum toilets, one of which is barrier-free and has a baby-changing table. There are two wheelchair spaces and bicycle space.

Bratislava – main tourist attractions:

Bratislava is a perfect destination for one-day trip from Vienna. The Old Town is not large, near city centre there is a castle on steep hill with panoramic views of the Old Town and bridge over Danube from terraces. On the outskirts of the capital lies ruins of Devín Castle.
