South Sudan gained independence in 2011. The railway in Sudan is currently only part of the Babanosa-Wau railway. The South Sudanese part of the line is 248 kilometers long. It is a narrow-gauge line built to a rail gauge of 1,067 mm. After gaining his independence, Wau station was the only railway station in South Sudan, and the line was rehabilitated thanks to United Nations funds. During the civil war, the railway bridge in Aweil was destroyed and a large part of the line was mined, which prevented normal railway traffic. In 2010, before South Sudan gained independence, the line was reopened.
In January 2018, the Sudanese government announced the resumption of rail services to Wau, but it was not stated whether passenger services were also resumed.
It is planned to build railway lines connecting South Sudan with Uganda (Kampala – Nimule via Malaba) and South Sudan with Kenya. In addition, a Juba – Nimule railway line is to be built on the territory of South Sudan (165 km). All projects will be implemented in cooperation with China.
Trains in South Sudan are operated by Sudan Railways Corporation.
