Train from Dublin to Belfast

Train from Dublin to Belfast is an only international train in Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. It is also the only passenger train running into and out of the European Union without any border checks and custom controls.

Intercity train from Dublin to Belfast is known as an “Enterprise”. The train is jointly operated by Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways. The train Dublin – Belfast was introduced on 11 Monday 1947 as the “Enterprise Express” by The Great Northern Railway. There were no intermediate stops, customs checks were limited to the Belfast and Dublin stations. In 1958 this was split between the Ulster Transport Authority and Córas Iompair Éireann and train was suspended. In 1970s the train was reinstated.

There are plans to build a new high speed railway line from Belfast via Dublin to Cork and Limerick (500 km).

The distance beetwen Dublin and Belfast is 181 km.

Train from Dublin to Belfast – rolling stock

Trains are comprised of De Dietrich Stock carriages purchased by Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways. The carriages were manufactured by De Dietrich Ferroviaire (now Alstom DDF) in France. The interiors of the carriages were based on that of the original rolling stock used by Eurostar. The carriages were refurbished in 2014. The trains are hauled by Class 201 diesel locomotives.

There are two classes of carriages on the train: Standard Class and First Class

Standard Class features:

First Class features:

– 2+1 seating arrangement
– two dedicated ‘Enterprise Plus’ coaches on all direct services with an onboard host

– spacious lumbar support and fully adjustable seat
– extra legroom
– adjustable blinds
– 4 seat and 2 seat table arrangements, seating capacity is 76 overall
– wheelchair accommodation available
